A few Q and A’s about engagement sessions. These are the most common questions I get, but if there’s anything you think I’ve left out, let me know and I’ll modify this post.
When can/should we schedule our engagement session?
- I can usually schedule engagement sessions on very short notice – as little as 1 or 2 weeks in advance.
- Sundays are usually best – though I’m definitely open to shooting any other day of the week.
- The best time of day to get together will depend on the time of year, but generally the best times will be around 2 hours before sunset – usually around 3:30 or 4:30pm in the winter, 5:30 or 6pm in the summer.
Where should we do the shoot?
- for engagement sessions people usually pick up to two locations. If we’re outdoors during the shoot, we’ll do a lot of walking around, so when I say location, I mean that in a very broad sense, so ‘the market’ or even ‘downtown’ could be one location. Generally, anything within walking distance isn’t a new location.
- of course, I can suggest places, but I think it’s important to pick a place that you’re comfortable or familiar with, and not one that just looks nice.
- often, the best place is somewhere that means something to you – maybe where you met, where he (or she!) proposed, or just someplace you like to hang out.
What should we wear?
I don’t really have any rules per se, but here are some guidelines to follow:
- wear similar colour families. Don’t match, but do try to complement each other.
- go for colour – try to avoid one of you wearing black and the other white, there’ll be plenty of that on the wedding day.
- try to avoid anything with writing on it, or busy patterns – simple patterns are good, solids are better.
- generally, fitted clothing looks better in photos than baggy clothing.
Other than that, wear what you feel good in, and think you look good in – and feel free to bring extra clothes if you want to change it up between locations.
…and since posts are always better with a picture, here’s one from last year.
