first day in Florence

If you’re new here, I’ve been sharing photos of my honeymoon in Italy until the wedding ‘season’ starts up again. This blog is fairly new so there are a couple of engagement shoots up, otherwise my best wedding work is on the main site

okay, it wasn’t actually our first day in Florence, but since we spent the day in Siena the day before, we didn’t really get to see much of Florence proper. I think if I were to ever move to Italy, Florence would be the place for me.

We set out in the morning, grabbed a quick breakfast and walked through one of the many open air markets. Leather, pashmina, belts, bags, t-shirts, you want it – they got it.italia_firenze_20080501_0013

Our first stop was Santa Maria del Fiore and its infamous dome. This was our first glimpse of it, and it literally stopped me in my tracks. We were walking in the street, and I’m pretty sure I almost got run over taking this picture.italia_firenze_20080501_0018italia_firenze_20080501_0024

We spent quite a bit of time inside – the artwork inside the dome is unbelievableitalia_firenze_20080501_0036and then when we noticed people walking up around on the catwalks, we set to see if we could get up there.italia_firenze_20080501_0050

the stairs of course are in the walls, so you really have no appreciation for how high you are until you actually step through the doorway onto the catwalk. We made our way around and through another doorway and took more stairs up to an even higher catwalk. After tunnel after tunnel and stone staircase after stone staircase, we really started to wonder just how high up the second catwalk was…

We spent a while up here – it was a hot day, and the breeze was a little chilly but pleasant. We made our way down the stairs and stopped for lunch, and then made our way to the Piazza della Republica – home of quite a few replicas of famous statues – Michaelangelo’s David being just one of them.italia_firenze_20080501_0097italia_firenze_20080501_0111

We spent the rest of the day exploring the city and headed back to our place for dinner. We stayed literally on the doorstep of the Piazza di Santo Spirito. The restaurants lining the plaza made it easy to find something good, and made for a pleasantly lively atmosphere.

We had meant to get out of the city and visit a vineyard recommended to us by some friends at La Roma. We didn’t realize though that it was a holiday, so none of the buses were running – that meant none of the museums were open either. It got hot in the afternoon, but it was still a nice day to wander around. The vineyard could wait…
